Colombia formally severed diplomatic relations with Iran on September 19, citing national security concerns, alleged links between Tehran and terrorist and drug-trafficking groups, and Iran’s conduct in the Middle East, its foreign ministry said Thursday.
In a statement, the ministry said the decision also took into account human rights violations in Iran, attacks on countries outside the Middle East conflict, the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz and obstruction of International Atomic Energy Agency efforts to verify Iran’s nuclear program.
The ministry said those developments had eroded Colombia’s trust in the Iranian government.
Colombia said the decision does not end consular relations with Iran. Its protocol office will inform Iranian authorities of the procedures to follow.
