Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian met former US Iran envoy Robert Malley and media and think tank figures in New York on Thursday evening, according to images released from the gathering.
The meeting took place at the Iranian delegation’s accommodation. Images also showed Trita Parsi, founder of the National Iranian American Council, and journalists Farnaz Fassihi and Negar Mortazavi among those attending.
Such gatherings with media and policy figures are held annually during Iranian delegations’ visits to the UN General Assembly.
Before Pezeshkian’s trip, The Wall Street Journal reported that he was seeking meetings with American and European think tank analysts. Some invitees had expressed concerns about US sanctions restrictions affecting informal discussions with Iranian officials.
“Nobody wants to be seen going there,” an Iran specialist who had previously received an invitation told the newspaper.
