Iranian lawmaker Mahmoud Nabavian called Iraq’s government an American “puppet” and warned of a response from Iraqis after Iranian flights to Baghdad and Najaf were suspended.
“The free and proud people of Iraq will certainly respond,” said Nabavian, a member of parliament’s National Security Committee. He did not specify what form that response would take.
He also demanded that Iraq’s Coordination Framework, an alliance of Shiite political groups whose members include close partners of Tehran, accept responsibility for choosing a prime minister he described as a US “puppet.”
Najaf airport suspended all flights to and from Iran from early Friday until further notice. Iran’s Civil Aviation Organization had earlier announced that Baghdad airport had stopped accepting Iranian airlines’ flights. Iraq's Erbil and Sulaimaniya airports also suspended Iranian flights on Friday.
