Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan called for restoring passage through the Strait of Hormuz to its pre-February 28 status with no fees or restrictions, while condemning Iranian attacks across the region, during his address to the UN General Assembly on Saturday.
“The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the countries of the region have been subjected to flagrant Iranian attacks,” Faisal said, adding that Saudi Arabia retained the right to protect its sovereignty and national resources.
He said security in the Persian Gulf was directly tied to global energy, trade and supply chains, and called for freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, Bab el-Mandeb, the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. Riyadh wants conditions in Hormuz restored to their pre-February 28 status, without fees or restrictions, he said.
Prince Faisal said the Middle East should be free of weapons of mass destruction, with peaceful nuclear programs subject to international oversight and verification.
