Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Saturday that Moscow had launched an initiative to restore peace in the Gulf region and resolve the crisis in the Strait of Hormuz.
Addressing the UN General Assembly, Lavrov said the confrontation in the Gulf and disruptions to the strategic waterway had to be resolved. He did not provide details of Russia's initiative, identify potential participants, or say whether it had been submitted to the United Nations.
Lavrov said Russia was ready to work with other countries to promote stability in the Middle East. He also called for the immediate release of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, condemned the killing of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and urged the establishment of a Palestinian state based on UN resolutions.
