The Chinese government is considering the [possibility of allowing some domestic tech companies, including Alibaba Group and ByteDance, to purchase new Nvidia chips built for high-end professional computers, The Information reported on Sunday, citing people with knowledge of the matter.
The Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology recently asked tech firms to share their plans to buy Nvidia's RTX Pro 5500 chips, according to the report. The ministry wanted to know how many new chips the companies plan to buy and what they will use them for, the sources explained, adding that the ministry told the tech giants that the government intends to approve the purchases.
However, the sources did not reveal when the approvals could come.
