Cigna beats Q2 estimates, lifts earnings guidance
The Cigna Group (NYSE:CI) reported second-quarter earnings and revenue that exceeded analyst expectations, while raising its full-year outlook, though shares fell 1% premarket following the announcement.
The health company posted adjusted earnings of $7.78 per share for the second quarter, beating the analyst consensus of $7.59 by $0.19. Revenue increased 7% YoY to $71.7 billion, surpassing the $70.18 billion estimate.
The company raised its full-year 2026 adjusted earnings outlook to at least $30.45 per share, up $0.10 from its prior projection and slightly above the analyst consensus of $30.41.
The revenue growth was driven by increases in both the Evernorth Health Services and Cigna Healthcare segments. Adjusted income from operations rose 6% YoY to $2.1 billion, primarily due to higher contributions from Cigna Healthcare. Shareholders' net income reached $1.7 billion, or $6.29 per share, compared to $1.5 billion, or $5.71 per share, in the second quarter of 2025.
"By harnessing technology, data and AI to deliver more personalized experiences, improve access and lower costs, we are creating greater value every day," said Brian C. Evanko, President and Chief Executive Officer of The Cigna Group. "Our strong second quarter results reflect continued progress against these priorities and demonstrate the effectiveness of our strategy and execution."
Cigna Healthcare's adjusted revenues increased 9% to $11.7 billion, with adjusted income from operations rising 17% to $1.3 billion, primarily due to improved margins in the U.S. Employer business. Evernorth Health Services saw adjusted revenues climb 6% to $61.5 billion, though adjusted income from operations declined 2% to $1.7 billion, reflecting client-focused initiatives and large contract renewals.
Total medical customers increased 2% from year-end 2025 to 18.4 million, while total pharmacy customers decreased 4% to 118.2 million.
