Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said on Tuesday that he held a "frank conversation" with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, urging Tehran to refrain from "any escalatory steps" and end its support for Russia's war against Ukraine.
Sybiha said that Ukraine's actions are "aimed solely at defending our country from Russian aggression and never intended to target civilian vessels or people." Referring to Iran's statements about the death of one of its nationals and a civilian vessel damaged in a recent incident, he said Russia "bears full responsibility for all provocations and casualties."
"Our position remains unchanged: Europe and the Middle East deserve stability, security, and peace," Sybiha concluded. The call came a day after Sybiha rejected Iran's threats over the incident as "unjustified and groundless," accusing Tehran of acting as a "direct accomplice" to Russia's war.
