Syria has sent military personnel to Saudi Arabia to provide advice and training as the kingdom faces attacks by Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthis, Reuters reported, citing two Syrian military sources and a senior US official.
The Syrian sources said scores of personnel had travelled to the kingdom in recent weeks for advisory and training work, although their mandate could be broader. The US official said Syrian teams were helping train Saudi and Yemeni units inside Saudi Arabia to improve their combat effectiveness.
The move brings former Syrian rebels who fought Bashar al-Assad and Iran-backed forces into a support role for Riyadh in its conflict with another Tehran ally.
