French Justice Minister Gerald Darmanin said on Saturday that he instructed public prosecutors and attorneys general to deliver an "extremely firm legal response" to the ongoing protests across the country. At least 550,000 people took part in demonstrations in France today to protest the cost of living crisis, with reports of clashes with police, looting and damage to public buildings.
Darmanin said the government's response should be "commensurate with the violence that has struck our country," denouncing the "unprecedented severity" of urban unrest. He urged pre-trial detention for those who have attacked law enforcement, firefighters, public buildings, and businesses.
