The United States has dealt severe blows to Iran's oil exports, digital financing and security-force payroll in recent months, CENTCOM commander Adm. Brad Cooper said in a video statement on Friday.
Cooper said US operations had prevented Iran from exporting at least $25 billion worth of crude oil and helped freeze nearly $350 million in cryptocurrency assets, restricting Tehran's ability to finance allied militias and rebuilding destroyed weapons facilities.
“Iran's government is withholding salaries, pensions and benefits to workers in industries such as oil and energy, manufacturing, construction, security and the IRGC itself,” he said.
Cooper said there were reports that Iran-aligned militias across the region were withholding payments to their fighters to divert funds to the Revolutionary Guards. He described the IRGC as increasingly desperate and linked its financial difficulties to repeated attacks on merchant ships in the Strait of Hormuz that have killed civilian sailors.
