The historic town hall in the city of Limoges in southwest-central France was set ablaze and caught fire as mass protests rocked the country on Saturday. According to the latest information, the hall's belfry collapsed, and the building sustained heavy damage.
Violence was recorded in France's two biggest cities, Paris and Marseilles, with crowds breaking into the town hall, while in the capital, rioters attempted to approach the Elysee Palace, but were repelled. Looting has also been reported in Paris and other cities.
Government officials and opposition figures condemned the violence, and French President Emmanuel Macron vowed to punish the perpetrators.
