"Usually this would be our slow time. [cut] Our fishing boats would not be crowded. They're very crowded. [cut] It would not be happening if it weren't for El Niño."

TROTTA: "Among the people we spoke with was Donna Kalez. She said they've landed 5,000 yellowfin tuna this summer as opposed to only two last year. The mahi-mahi or dorado are literally jumping out of the water."

TROTTA: "We've got some visitors for the first time ever. The longfin bigeye species of fish was spotted in California for the first time. We had sea turtles nesting on the coast of California for the first [time]. We're also getting really unusual visitors like the yellow-bellied sea snake, only comes once a decade or so, hammerhead sharks, whale sharks, all migrating further north with the warm waters."

"To our knowledge it's never happened before. Any species of sea turtle nesting on California beaches." // "We were able to step in, working with NOAA and other partners, to pull those eggs and bring them here to the aquarium [cut] and help give them a head start."

TROTTA: "The biggest losers here aren't the fish, it's the homeowners, the owners of multi-million dollar properties right on the beach. [cut] Just to the north of here, the entire Tamarack State Beach has pretty much disappeared. It's all rocks."

:: Capt. Brian Woolley, Dana Wharf Sportfishing & Whale Watching

"With any El Niño event, there's pros and cons, right? [cut] You have to feel for the people that their homes are in jeopardy. Some of the storms are going to come and the flooding that's going to take place."

TROTTA: "El Niño is not caused by climate change, but it is affected by it. [cut] With ocean temperatures already elevated, that is exacerbating the effects, both in terms of sea level rise and the fish species that we're seeing."

WOOLLEY: "They don't know where they are on the planet. The fish want warm water and food, and if that is here [cut] it's going to be here as long as it needs to be until something natural out there changes and that fish is forced to go look someplace else."
