Iran says it sent Washington Hormuz reopening plan via mediator Qatar

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Saturday Tehran had sent Washington, through mediator Qatar, a seven-day plan under which the Strait of Hormuz could reopen and normal maritime traffic resume if the Islamic Republic’s conditions were met.

“We conveyed a specific seven-day plan and said that if the necessary conditions are met, the Strait can be reopened and normal maritime traffic can resume within seven days,” Araghchi said. “The choice is now America’s.”

Araghchi said US military actions had prevented implementation of the June memorandum of understanding and that dispute-resolution mechanisms envisaged under the agreement had been ignored.

“You cannot bomb a country, threaten to destroy it and blockade it, and then expect maritime security to return to normal,” he said.

“The Islamic Republic does not accept coercion, threats or intimidation and will not relinquish its sovereign rights under pressure,” he said. “But it remains ready for dialogue based on mutual respect and credible guarantees.”

On the war between Yemen’s Houthis and Saudi Arabia, Araghchi said Tehran supported the sovereignty and territorial integrity of both countries and was ready to help facilitate dialogue based on a previously agreed peace roadmap.
