The Japanese government has decided to extend the deployment of the country's Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) in the Middle East for one year, Kyodo News reported on Monday.
The news outlet reported that authorities made the decision amid ongoing regional tensions, adding that the decision is expected to be approved at a cabinet meeting "soon."
In addition, Japan launched an independent maritime intelligence-gathering mission in the Middle East back in 2019 in order to protect its critical energy supply lines following a series of attacks on oil tankers.
