The US Embassy in Russia on Tuesday urged its citizens in the Irkutsk region to follow local health authorities' guidance, avoid affected facilities and seek medical care promptly if they develop fever or respiratory symptoms following reports of suspected pneumonic plague.
The embassy said US staff could face additional travel restrictions over health and security concerns and it reiterated a Level 4 "Do Not Travel" advisory for Russia, urging nationals there to "depart immediately."
Earlier in the day, State Secretary Marco Rubio also urged Moscow to provide more information about the death of a lab technician, Darya Shipilova, in Siberia. "I think it's incumbent upon Russia to obviously share more information with the world," Rubio told reporters in Reykjavik. Also, WHO spokesperson Christian Lindmeier said there was no evidence of a wider outbreak, adding that all known contacts of the patients were being monitored and none had developed symptoms.
