International Business Machines Corp. (IBM) and Lockheed Martin Corp. announced on Thursday that they are launching a quantum innovation hub at the ETH Zurich university, through an agreement with Switzerland's Federal Office for Defence Procurement. Under the deal, IBM will install its quantum computer system, Quantum System Two, at the Swiss National Supercomputing Centre (CSCS) at ETH Zurich's Lugano campus, and develop joint projects with Lockheed Martin, including exploring quantum sensing applications for navigation and improving additive manufacturing of metallic alloys.
The IBM Quantum System Two is expected to be operational by the end of 2026, with the company's agreement with ETH Zurich running until the end of 2029. "This project extends the strategic relationship between Lockheed Martin and IBM in quantum and AI while positioning Switzerland as a leader in these critical, cutting-edge fields. It provides resources and expertise, develops skills and enables joint research across the Swiss commercial, defense and academic ecosystem," Lockheed's CTO Craig Martell said.
