A bipartisan artificial intelligence safety bill could be presented to the United States Senate as early as next week, Semafor reported on Thursday. The legislation is sponsored by Senate Majority Leader John Thune, Republican Senator Ted Cruz and Democratic Senator Amy Klobuchar.
According to the report, AI companies and public advocacy groups have received the draft of the bill and are providing their comments to the senators. Klobuchar told the outlet that the legislation contains "commonsense guardrails to address the risks posed by AI systems," adding that Congress must "act now." The European Union was the first to enact AI safety rules, which came into force on August 2.
