Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson said Canada was supporting US military action and economic pressure against Iran after Ottawa backed US-led efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and pledged further measures against Tehran.
“Canada knows full well that the Strait of Hormuz was open and secure before USrael launched a war of aggression against Iran on 28 February,” Esmaeil Baghaei wrote Monday in a post on X.
He said Canada could not present itself as a defender of “peace and security,” “freedom of navigation” and “international law” while backing US military action and Washington’s policies in the region.
“This is neither ‘diplomacy’ nor ‘responsible statecraft’,” Baghaei wrote. “It is a display of strategic confusion and submission to intimidation.”
Canada said Sunday it was coordinating with the United States, France and Britain to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and maintain economic and diplomatic pressure on Iran.
