UAE says energy exports will not be ‘held hostage’ by Iran war

The United Arab Emirates is developing alternative routes for energy exports and trade to ensure they are not “held hostage” by the war between the United States and Iran, presidential adviser Anwar Gargash said on Monday.

“Our energy exports will not be held hostage, nor will our trade and economic activity,” Gargash told the Hili Forum in Abu Dhabi.

He said the UAE was expanding port capacity on its eastern coast and developing pipelines, railways and trade routes to create alternative corridors.

Gargash warned rebuilding trust after Tehran’s attacks on its neighbours could take decades.

He also criticized countries astride the Persian Gulf for failing to turn shared concerns over Iran into a coordinated regional strategy.

"Freedom of navigation is not a concession to be granted, nor a principle to be renegotiated under pressure," Gargash said, adding that any long-term resolution must include credible guarantees against further Iranian attacks on regional states.
