Ukrainian Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko resigned on Monday as a corruption scandal engulfed the Prosecutor General's Office following the launch of the anti-corruption agencies' "Carthage" operation. "This is a political decision. And I made it consciously," Kravchenko said in a statement.
Namely, the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) and Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAPO) launched an operation investigating an alleged criminal network that took payments to shield fraudulent call centres from law enforcement, with the proceeds later laundered through property and other assets. The probe has focused on suspected links to the prosecutor's office, including its International Cooperation Department deputy head Serhiy Kropyva, who was arrested over his alleged involvement.
Following the launch of the operation, Kravchenko was reportedly absent from public view for a period. He later re-emerged and denied any involvement in the alleged scheme. The resignation came following Kravchenko's meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky earlier this evening.
