Iran rejects Arab League statement, reasserts claim over three islands

Iran’s Foreign Ministry on Wednesday rejected what it called “false claims and baseless accusations” in the final statement of an Arab League foreign ministers’ meeting.

In a statement carried by state media, the ministry said Iran’s sovereignty over Abu Musa, Greater Tunb and Lesser Tunb was “indisputable.” It added: “Any territorial claim in this regard lacks any legal or historical basis.”

The ministry also rejected allegations of Iranian interference in Yemen, saying Tehran supports the country’s unity and territorial integrity and backs Yemeni-Yemeni dialogue based on an agreed roadmap.

The ministry said insecurity along regional shipping routes was the result of direct US and Israeli military actions, according to the statement.

The Foreign Ministry added that security in the Persian Gulf and Sea of Oman “must be ensured on the basis of cooperation among coastal countries and without the interference of foreign powers.”
