Iraq struggles to disarm Iran-backed militias despite September deadline - Reuters

Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi is struggling to disarm Iran-backed Shi'ite militias despite a September 30 deadline he set after meeting US President Donald Trump, Reuters reported on Wednesday.

Five Iran-aligned armed groups have rejected the deadline to surrender their weapons, dissolve and join state security forces, according to sources cited by Reuters.

The militias, part of the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, command about 50,000 fighters and have missiles, drones and anti-aircraft weapons, Reuters said. Zaidi also faces pressure from Shi'ite politicians who warn that tougher action against the groups could trigger instability.
