German Federal Government spokesperson Stefan Kornelius said on Thursday that Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi backed the "swift signing" of the European Union-India free trade agreement.
During a phone call, the two leaders "reaffirmed the strategic partnership between Germany and India" and discussed security cooperation and international issues. Following the talks, Modi wrote on X that the countries would further deepen ties across "trade & investment, defence, clean energy, advanced technologies, talent mobility and other key areas."
The EU and India concluded negotiations on the trade deal in January. The agreement is expected to eliminate or reduce tariffs on 96.6% of EU goods exports to India and could double EU goods exports to the country by 2032. The deal still requires legal review, EU Council approval, European Parliament consent, and ratification by India before taking effect.
