US Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz said Thursday that Washington would establish its own panel to monitor the enforcement of Iran sanctions after China and Russia vetoed a UN mechanism for doing so.
“The United States will not let obstruction at the UN prevent us from ensuring Iran never has a nuclear weapon,” Waltz wrote on X.
In a video accompanying the post, Waltz said China and Russia had vetoed a panel of experts intended to monitor and help implement sanctions reimposed on Iran under the UN snapback mechanism.
He said Washington would create its own panel and invited other countries to join the effort.
China and Russia vetoed a US-backed Security Council resolution on Sept. 17 that would have extended the mandate of UN experts monitoring sanctions on Iran. Eleven council members voted in favor, while Pakistan and Somalia abstained. Moscow has argued that the snapback process itself lacks legal basis.
