Roche Unveils Newborn Screening Test For 3 Genetic Conditions Of SMA, SCID, Sickle Cell

Swiss drug major Roche Holding AG (RHHBY,RO.SW,ROG.SW) announced Wednesday the launch of newborn screening test for three severe genetic conditions, such as Spinal Muscular Atrophy or SMA, Severe Combined Immunodeficiency Disease or SCID, and Sickle Cell Disease or SCD, simultaneously.

TIB MOLBIOL, a subsidiary of Roche Diagnostics, has launched the LightMix Newborn TREC/SMN1/HBB kit, an in vitro diagnostic test for newborn screening in countries accepting the CE mark. The LightMix Newborn TREC/SMN1/HBB kit runs on established LightCycler systems.

SMA is a genetic neuromuscular disorder causing progressive degeneration of nerve cells in the spinal cord, leading to muscle weakness. SCID is a group of rare, life-threatening genetic disorders characterised by a lack of functioning T cells, leaving infants with virtually no immune system.

SCD is an inherited red blood cell disorder caused by a genetic mutation in the HBB gene.

According to the firm, the launch of the IVDR-approved test provides a crucial, ready-to-use solution for private and academic hospital labs, enabling the early detection of these devastating conditions. With early diagnosis, clinicians can provide answers for patients and their families and enable them to access the appropriate treatments sooner.

AbbVie Presents Detailed Phase 1 Data for ABBV-295, a Long-Acting Amylin Analog

  • Detailed findings, to be presented in a short oral presentation, demonstrated an approximately 11- to 12-day half-life and dose-proportional increases in plasma exposure, supporting evaluation of ABBV-295 at dosing intervals beyond weekly administration, including every-other-week and monthly regimens
  • ABBV-295 showed meaningful body weight reduction and a favorable tolerability profile at all evaluated dose levels, with topline results announced earlier this year
  • Findings support advancement of ABBV-295 — a non-incretin, amylin-based mechanism — into Phase 2 development for chronic weight management

AbbVie (NYSE: ABBV) today announced that detailed results from the multiple ascending dose (MAD) part of its Phase 1 study evaluating ABBV-295 will be presented in a short oral presentation at the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) 2026 Annual Meeting (Milan, Italy; September 28 – October 2). The study evaluated the tolerability, pharmacokinetics (PK), and pharmacodynamics (PD) of subcutaneous ABBV-295, an investigational long-acting amylin analog, in adults with a mean body mass index (BMI) of less than 30 kg/m2.

These detailed results being presented are from the 60 participants in Part 2B/2C of the MAD study, who were randomized to receive ABBV-295 (n = 45) or placebo (n = 15). Participants had a mean age of 41.5 years and a mean BMI of 29.3 kg/m2, and 88% were male. ABBV-295 was dose-escalated to 4, 6, or 14 mg once weekly, 14 mg every other week, or 8 mg monthly, and administered for 12 or 13 weeks.1 ABBV-295 is an investigational therapy that represents a mechanistically distinct class from incretin-based therapies such as GLP-1 and GIP receptor agonists

'Meta said to use data centers to avoid $5.9B in taxes: NYT'

Meta Platforms Inc. saved $2 billion in taxes in 2024 and $3.9 billion in 2025 by declaring its artificial intelligence data centers as "pilot models," the New York Times reported on Wednesday, citing sources with knowledge of the matter. The tech giant allegedly used the United States Research & Experimentation Tax Credit, which was introduced in 1981 to support innovation and domestic competitiveness.

The report also cited Meta's filings acknowledging that the tax savings could be overturned by the US Internal Revenue Service, mainly due to "uncertainties with our research tax credits." The company did not respond when asked by the newspaper to explain "what made its AI data centers experimental."

Shell approves C$33 billion LNG Canada expansion

Shell and its partners approved the LNG Canada Phase 2 expansion on Tuesday, committing C$33 billion to double the facility's production capacity in Kitimat, British Columbia.

The expansion will add two liquefaction trains to the facility, raising total export capacity to 28 million tonnes per annum from 14 mtpa.

Shell holds a 40% stake in the joint venture and expects to receive nearly 6 mtpa of additional LNG from the expansion. The company targets commercial operations for the early 2030s.

Prime Minister Mark Carney said the C$33 billion investment will make LNG Canada the second-largest facility of its kind globally.

"The decision to move ahead with LNG Canada Phase II sends an important message to businesses, investors and customers here and around the world: Canada can and will deliver. We are moving from ambition to action. With moves like this, we are increasing our competitiveness and unlocking our economic potential to create good jobs, strengthen communities and economic security," said Candace Laing, President and CEO, Canadian Chamber of Commerce.

The joint venture partners include Malaysia's Petronas Chemicals Group Bhd (KL:PCGB), PetroChina, Mitsubishi Corp. (TYO:8058), and Korea Gas Corp. LNG Canada represents the country's first large-scale LNG export terminal and ranks among Canada's largest private-sector investments.

The expansion positions Canada to become one of the world's largest LNG exporters.
