South Korea is preparing to deploy military assets to support freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and aims to send them before the end of the year, Reuters reported Thursday, citing government and military sources.
The government is considering options including a maritime patrol aircraft, a logistics support vessel or a mine detection and clearance unit, and has discussed a potential contribution with the United States, Britain and France, according to the report.
South Korea’s presidential Blue House said Seoul had been discussing practical ways to support freedom of navigation in the strait but said reports that a deployment had already been decided were “different from the facts.”
