Zuckerberg said to oppose AI watchdog proposal

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg is said to have voiced opposition to the establishment of a national AI regulator during a previously unreported phone call with US President Donald Trump last month, according to sources cited by Politico on Thursday.

A person familiar with the matter said Zuckerberg did not ask the president to change his stance on establishing an AI watchdog, but suggested that people appointed to the regulatory body should share Trump's approach to AI. Meanwhile, a White House spokesperson said the Trump administration is "committed to balancing innovation and security in AI policymaking" when asked about the phone call.

Namely, the Trump administration is considering establishing a self-regulatory body for AI companies modeled on the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA). However, the proposal has reportedly encountered further opposition from former White House AI adviser David Sacks, who dismissed the initiative as a "horrible idea."
