Yemen’s Foreign Minister Afrah Al-Zouba called Sunday for international support for the government’s newly announced military campaign to retake territory held by Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthis.
“Yemenis have the right to restore their state and security, and it is in the interest of the world for Yemen to be stable,” Al-Zouba said in a post on X.
She said the offensive announced by Presidential Leadership Council chairman Rashad al-Alimi was aimed at restoring government sovereignty across Yemen, placing weapons under state control and ending what she described as the Houthis’ exploitation of Yemeni territory and coastlines in support of Iran’s agenda.
“We call upon our brothers, friends, and the international community to support the Yemeni people, their state, and their national institutions in confronting the terrorist Houthi militia,” Al-Zouba said, adding that all opportunities for de-escalation and peace had been exhausted.
She said the Houthis had seized Yemenis’ will “by force of arms” and accused the group of endangering the lives of Yemenis.
“The danger posed by this militia and its crimes has transcended Yemen’s borders,” Al-Zouba said, adding that ending what she called the Houthis’ aggression and coup had become a “shared national, regional, and international responsibility and interest.”
